Safety

Madrid is generally very safe for visitors, including solo travelers. The main risk is pickpocketing, not violent crime — stay alert in crowded spots like Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, the Metro, and El Rastro market, especially on Sundays.

• Keep bags zipped and in front of you in crowds.
• Avoid displaying phones and cameras carelessly on outdoor terraces.
• Use licensed white taxis or Uber/Cabify at night rather than unmarked cars.

Etiquette

• Meal times run late: lunch is typically 2–3:30 PM, dinner rarely starts before 9 PM.
• Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory — rounding up or leaving 5–10% for good service is generous.
• Siesta is mostly a myth in central Madrid — most shops and all major attractions stay open through the afternoon, though some small family businesses still close 2–5 PM.
• Dress modestly for religious sites (Almudena Cathedral, San Francisco el Grande) — shoulders and knees covered.

Money

The euro (€) is the currency. Cards are widely accepted, including contactless, but carry some cash for small tapas bars and markets.
